New Agriculture Practices

Climate Smart Sustainable Agriculture Programme in Madhya Pradesh:

This Programme aims to make the agriculture sustainable through adoption of technologies and practices that are environment friendly and appropriate to the changing climatic conditions. It aims to tackle three main objectives: sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes; adapting and building resilience to climate change; and reducing and/or removing greenhouse gas emissions, where possible.

The programme includes introduction of new /appropriate technologies like Broad Bed Furrow (BBF), zero tillage, introduction of new seeds to replace the less productive or less suited to the changing environment, environment friendly inputs, micro irrigation system to improve water use efficiency, etc. and being implemented with participation of Farmers of Farmer’s Field Schools (FFS) constituted in project villages. Capacities of the farmers are being enhanced through training and exposure visits to Agricultural Research Institutions and relevant organizations to have a firsthand information about the new / latest techniques/ practices. Farmers also get weather alert though mobile linkage under this initiative.

The major practices and functions being promoted are as under-
  1. 1. Determination of fertilizer rate by soil testing.
  2. 2. Facilitate availability of quality seeds of appropriate varieties
  3. 3. Encouraging farmers to produce seeds of full requirement for the next year by sowing certified seeds of improved variety every year
  4. 4. Sowing the seeds after seed treatment and use of organic manure.
  5. 5. Providing agriculture equipment on rent through custom hiring centres
  6. 6. Adoption of new techniques like "Ridge & Farrow" or "Raised bed" method for soybean, Zero Tillage Method for Wheat Sowing, Direct Seeding for Rice cultivation and “Dharwad Method" in Tur.
  7. 7. Saving irrigation water and equal water distribution using innovative irrigation practices such as drip and sprinkler.
  8. 8. Adoption of crop diversification and integrated pest and disease control measures.
  9. 9. Adoption of practices for alternative sources of income through cultivation as well as horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, etc.
  10. 10. Registration of farmers on E Nam portal to facilitate sale of their products;
  11. 11. Promoting waste land development through soil and water conservation measures and plantation to enhance green cover and fodder availability.

Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF): A type of chemical-free farming where the total cost of growing and harvesting plants comes out to be zero (taking into consideration the costs incurred by the farmers are recovered through inter-cropping).

Jawahar model of farming (JMF): Though this model resource constrained Small & Marginal farmers (SMFs) are encouraged to adopt practices like timely sowing of their crop without waiting for the rain; diversify their crop production system to minimize risks while ensuring inflow of cash at short intervals for financial growth; and finally engage farmers throughout the year in their own farm for social wellbeing. Fifty SMFs of Damoh District were trained for JMF of which 30 have adopted the model.

Use of Toilet Manure in Agriculture: 100 farmers from both the districts were trained to use toilet manure in agriculture and to promote it 64 new twin pit toilets were construction in Damoh district with support under SBM.
